History

Almost 85 years have past. We are glad that piano, violin, vocal and organ classes founded in 1923, have grown into 7 departments: piano, the strings, wind and percussion instruments, folk instruments, vocal, choir-conducting, and music theory, where study almost 500 students: 360 – at music school, 37- at primary school (forms 5-9), 80 – at secondary school.
During these years has appeared a number of collectives – the school string orchestra, the secondary school chamber orchestra, school and secondary school accordionists’ orchestras, school girls’ and boys’ choirs, primary school girls’ choir, secondary school girls’ and mixed choirs, rural capella and and folk music ensemble, jazz and accordionists’ trio, where the youngest school pupils as well as secondary school students learn to make music.
Of course, the secondary school has become a centre of town music life. At an average, 30 concerts a year are held in school; in addition to traditional concerts (report, holiday, thematic, pedagogues and pupils’ concerts), there are organized concert-lectures in town schools, kindergartens, orphanages, as well as concerts-shows and festivals of special, specific directions. Some competitions and festivals have become a tradition: St.Broks’ competition of young singers and vocal ensembles, the International accordionists’ competition-festival, the Festival-concert for music school choirs of Southern Latgalian region, a cycle of concert lectures for town school “Let’s Get Acquainted”, the international chamber ensemble competition “NOVA MUSICA” and others.
The foundation of our professionalism was laid by N.Vanadziņš, A.Feils, J.Rozītis, V.Aksjutičs, J.Karps, B.Braunfelde, O.Borovska, decently developed by St.Broks, M.Bašs, P.Kvelde, V.Oseņenko, E.Martinova, V.Mirošņikovs, nowadays the following experienced pedagogues contribute to the growth T.Broka, V.Hodukins, R.Petkeviča, V.Cīrule (head of the vocal department), T.Savickis, St.Gribusts (head of the wind and percussion instruments’ department), Ģ.Keviša, V.Lūse, I.Eižvertiņa, V.Akulova, N.Sļusars. Today we are proud of pedagogues who carry on this work – heads of education L.Plotiņa un I.Boikova, other heads of departments and methodical commissions E.Bambāne, L.Ļebedeva, V.Drobiševska, I.Ozuns, Ē.Daugulis, I.Gusarova, I.Locika, mentors J.Kostjukeviča, J.Aļeškeviča un I.Zeile, as well as all colleagues of older and younger generations who carry on these traditions.
Another essential tradition is that pedagogues can work in creative sphere in our town, region and reublic: T. Broka is a chief conductor at the General song festival of Latvia; J. Ustinskovs conducts various choirs; the accordionists’orchestra run by V. Hodukins has already become internationally acknowledged; Ē.Daugulis successfully works with folk music ensembles; the string ensemble conducted by N.Sļusars has become a regular part at town events; the chamber orchestra, conducted by A. Broks, prepares serious concert programmes for the town dwellers. Music pianists A.Broks, E.Bambāne, I.Boikova, a vocalist J. Borele, violinists I.Ozuns, N.Sļusars, St.Petkevičs constantly make music; music is composed by A.Broks, J.Ustinskovs, Ē.Daugulis; V.Hodukins, A.Broks, Ē.Daugulis, N.Sļusars make arrangements and instrumentation.
Of course our students take part in all competitions and festivals if possible, because they can give musicians hardiness and experience which are necessary; these are classical obligotary state and international competitions and not traditional jazz, folk music Note Domino and other festivals. We remember that being sound in body means being sound in mind, that is why in spite of our age of 85 years, we – students and pedagogues make achievements in sports, which can be proved by diplomas received in different town school competitions.
